NITS MIRZA

The economic development and progress of a nation depends largely on the quality of its professional and higher education system. Mere increase in the number of institutions and universities does not ensure real development; the academic systems need to blend the right philosophy, theory and practice and combine it with true innovations and thorough professionalism to be world class.  Today the largest segment of India ’s population is the youth, and the World Development Report, published in 2007, clearly mentioned that the phenomenon of increasing youth population in India presents an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate growth and reduce poverty. The North Eastern Region of India possesses boundless natural endowment and tremendous scope for human resource development to benefit not only the emerging state economies in the region but also to contribute to the national economic growth and development. 

With this clear understanding and a deep commitment, the North East Technical Education Society (NETES) launched its first higher education venture in the form of NETES Institute of Technology & Science Mirza  (NITS Mirza) in the year 2009. NITS Mirza has been conceived, designed and developed to be a path-breaking institution defining the new contours of technical and management education in the region. NETES was formed in Guwahati in the year 2005 and has already initiated a number of ambitious projects to develop appropriate skills and impart relevant knowledge to the young students of this region.

INFRASTRUCTURE AT THE NITS MIRZA CAMPUS

Mirza is an emerging township on the National Highway 37, located just 28 km from the city centre of Guwahati and 6 km from the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport , Guwahati. Nestled amidst pollution-free green surroundings with a serene ambience, the NITS Mirza is being developed in a sprawling 20-acre campus, incorporating all those aspects that go into making a healthy and well-equipped young engineer ready to accept modern challenges of life. Starting with the engineering college, with a strong research & development infrastructure the master plan provides for subsequent schools for Science and Management education within the same campus.  NITS Mirza is affiliated to the Gauhati University and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

In the first phase of development NITS Mirza has been launched last year (academic session 2009-2010) with intake of about 200 students in 4 branches of engineering, a 6000 sq ft Library, a 3000 sq. ft. Computer Centre, a 9000 sq ft modern Workshop, state-of-the-art laboratories, classrooms, besides a 100,000 sq ft playground for outdoor games and a gym. Other recreation facilities and students amenities would also be provided for the students and faculty.

PEOPLE BEHIND NITS MIRZA

North East Technical Education Society (NETES) was formed by a group of like-minded, socially aware and committed individuals drawn from academia, industry, business and social enterprises. While most of the members are post-graduates and Ph.Ds from the IITs and Assam Engineering College , the Society is proud to also have a few well-educated NRIs and past Directors and Chairmen of national bodies as Associate Advisors of the Society. NITS Mirza is a dream child of this group of passionately committed people, who aspire to put the North East Region firmly and prominently on the technical and management education map of India .

GOVERNANCE

NITS Mirza is governed by a Governing Body, constituted in accordance with the AICTE guidelines composed of eminent academic leaders, NETES members, and nominees of AICTE, Assam Government, Gauhati University , and the industry. The Principal of NITS Mirza is the administrative and academic head of the institute.

FACULTY

The institute has a strong line-up of highly qualified faculties in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and Chemical Engineering and Humanities with academic and research interest, some of them with considerable industry and research background both within and outside the country.

LIBRARY

A well-appointed library serves as the backbone of expanding horizons of education and knowledge. With about 6000 sq ft of covered area at present, the NITS Mirza Library has been planned to finally extend up to about 20,000 sq ft with the best collection of text books, reference books, journals and magazines to cater to the students and faculty of the institute. Consisting of leading academicians, NITS Mirza management is naturally sensitive to the critical importance of adequate reading room facilities, e-journals, fast and easy access to reference material and flexible timings for the users of this library. Library hours are extended beyond normal working hours during examination time to give students an edge over their counterparts in other institutions/colleges. 

COMPUTER CENTRE

With computers becoming an integral part of academia and industry, NITS Mirza students would be spending a major part of their student life at this Centre, which is equipped with adequate numbers of state-of-the-art computers with power back-up, sufficient printing facilities, and quick connectivity to the internet and other shared resources. However, the most attractive feature of this Centre is first-of-its-kind in this Region “Remote Laboratory” that promises to bring about a revolutionary change to the way students conduct experiments and access hands-on study materials.

INTERNET

In its quest to make its students truly global citizens by adopting the best constructive practices of the Internet World, NITS Mirza provides for wireless internet connectivity to its students, faculty and staff. Appropriate network security ensures the use of the internet resources for our stated goal of furthering quality education of global standards. 

SPORTS & RECREATION

The Students’ Gymkhana in NITS Mirza would act as the backbone of sports, cultural, literary and other extra-curricular activities of the institute. Students would be encouraged to develop and hone their skills in varied forms of games, sports, fine arts, and performing arts, as well as participate in various prestigious events of the Region and the country. Mindful of the need to create well-rounded and well-adjusted members of society for a bright future, NITS Mirza follows an annual calendar that puts a premium on the development of soft skills, communication capabilities, personality development, teamwork and leadership, besides research-led education in the fields of science, engineering and management.           

MEDICAL HELP

There is arrangement in the campus for the treatment of minor illness. Qualified doctors would be available round the clock for consultation. In the unfortunate eventuality of any major illness, immediate steps will be taken for their treatment in the city hospitals and parents/guardians will be immediately informed.

GUIDANCE AND PLACEMENT

Students in groups will be attached to Faculty Advisers who will interact with and counsel them on their day-to-day and academic problems. Arrangements will be made for Summer Training of the students in industries and research laboratories / institutions. The Placement Cell will arrange interview of the final year students with potential employers.

RESEARCH, TRAINING & SKILL DEVELOPMENT

In the very first year of its establishment, NETES and NITS Mirza made major achievements in establishing the following facilities for research, training and skill development of the students of NITS Mirza as well as students and graduates from other institutions:

Robotics Lab

A most sophisticated Robotics and embedded systems training center equipped to provide students the opportunity to learn hands-on, the 'Art of Robotics'.

Remote Lab

Remote Lab of NITS Mirza, the first of its kind in this part of the country, is an innovative concept in experiment based training & research to enable students to access experiments and tutorials via internet in a unique learning process.

Bhola Nath Saikia Communication Research Centre

A centre at NITS Mirza with cutting edge R&D infrastructure to work on areas such as computer to computer wireless communication, broadband, digital modulation etc. 

Regional Centre of Excellence in VLSI/Embedded Systems of Synopsys, California, USA

Remote learning from world-class experts and Remote access laboratory practices in VLSI/Embedded Systems through adoption of modern industry oriented curriculum of Synopsys compatible to European/US credit systems to promote industry networks and enhance employability world wide through Synopsys certification.

Internship Programme

The Internship Programme at NITS Mirza offers opportunities to graduates from other institutions in skill development. One of our Internees has already been selected by Synopsys, USA for advanced internship.

NITS Mirza offers admission in the following disciplines of 4-year Bachelor of Engineering Degree course under affiliation to Gauhati University for the academic session 2010-11:
