NITS ROBOTIC ACTIVITIES

This newly established Engineering Institute named "NETES INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY & SCIENCE, Mirza" has reformed itself as an Institute offering many privileges towards the department of Robotic Science apart from Engineering Education. The students of NITS Mirza has been part of many technical competitions organised by different Technical Institute and has successfully brought glory back to home. Besides this, the Institute has also been a part of a Science & Technology meet held at Chandmari, Guwahati in the month of March '10 and has attained appreciation and fame for robotic knowledge of the students.

Before the commencement of the very first class here, robotic workshop was organised for the interested students around the state and many students from various Institutes, including AEC, NIT Silchar.etc were part of it. After the commencement of the classes of its first batch, the trend of robotic education was even further raised. The students of NITS Mirza have always shown great interest towards this exciting department of robotics.

HOW IT ALL BEGIN

Before the beginning of its first academic session, some students of NIT Silchar & other Institutes had been part of its first Workshop involving in various projects. They designed a robot for small scale industrial purposes, which in return gave them valuable experience towards robotic science and along with it gave NITS Mirza, the starting of robotic culture. Since then, NITS Mirza's students have taken this culture to a praiseworthy level and still carrying it with even greater interest.

PARTICIPATION

NITS Mirza has involved itself in a lot of technical events within a very short span of time and also brought name and fame regarding robotic knowledge of its students.

Its first technical participation was in the Annual Technical Fest of Tezpur University, in the year 2009. The students, regardless being the students of 1 stsemester, took part in the Manual Robotic Competition. Its worth mentioning that the students of NITS Mirza gave a praiseworthy competition to their opponents and showed announced the arrival of a new generation the Robotic world round the technical Institutes of the State.

Next, the students of this Institute participated in the Annual Technical Fest of GIMT, in 2010. Here, the students took part in many events including both manual and autonomous robotic competitions. This time the students returned as winners as they brought back home the prizes in both Autonomous and Manual Events, and showed they NITS Mirza's students are not ordinary.
The next target was AEC and it was not at all a child's play. It was organised in 2010 as the Yearly Technical Competitions of AEC. Here too, the students took part in various events, including both ground and underwater robotic competitions. Like GIMT too, the students put up a great competition and were able to bring back glory once more to the NITS Mirza's prize gallery, and in the meantime earned a lot of experience, knowledge and appraisal.

The students of NITS Mirza have further taken part in a Science & Technical Meet in Chandmari, Guwahati, organised by ASTEC, to give an opportunity to the upcoming interested students towards the field of science and robotic technology. Here too it's students put up a great exhibition showing both Autonomous & Manual robots, RF circuit based remote control cars and along with these the self-prepared small scale industry robot was exhibited. The show was even made more interesting and exciting as the NITS Mirza stall brought forward a new and advanced technology known as the "REMOTE LAB", with the help of which many experiments are carried out from a faraway distance from the actual physical existence of the experiments. This whole show gave the students valuable experience and along with that they earned a lot of pride, name and praiseworthy compliments.

ROBOTS CREATED BY STUDENTS

Many a robot have been created by the students of NITS Mirza and are still working on some better models. The following is a brief description of a few of them.

Manual Robot with Claw attached to carry loads

This Robot is basically meant for the industrial purposes, which can carry loads from a place to other, decreasing human efforts and making easier completion of the job. This demo of such a robot was made by some students of NITS Mirza, which has a claw attached to the main body which carries the load. The claw is capable of moving in such a way so that it can get to the load and grab it and transfer to its desired place. Three motors were used for its construction and for the multi-directional movement of the robot; the stop & turn method or the differential rotation of the motors was applied. This robot was a simple manual robot with simple mechanism.

Atmega8 based Autonomous line following robot

This Robot uses the Atmega8 Microcontroller to control itself without the manual control of anyone. In its construction, a photo diode and an IR led has been used together as a sensor. The IR led emits light of a certain frequency and the photo diode receives the same frequency wavelength after being reflected from any surface. This was main logic behind the robot. A programme has been saved in the Atmega8 to enable the sensor to sense a certain path which finally enables the robot to move in a desired path without going off-track. The robot consists of the Atmega8 Microcontroller, two/three motors, a motor driver L293D, a power regulator and power supply to give power to it. This robot can be used as a crack detector on a railway track or as a spying robot.

Manual Robot that runs in water

The students of the Institution have also made a submarine of their own. This robot is capable of moving in water and along with that raises any substance under water and bring it up. This robot is made mainly using a motor and propeller, and a light weight plastic container to make it keep floating. The main idea behind the robot is the propeller. The rotation of the propeller enables the robot to move forward. A proper study of mechanics is required for its construction. This robot can be used as a water vehicle to know the various in and under water movement.

SUMMER ROBOTIC WORKSHOP AT NITS MIRZA, 2010

The students along with the guide of some teachers organised a Free Summer Workshop on Robotics in the month of June in the Institution. The motive of the workshop was to give the interested students a basic view on robotics and other technology, which include Web Designing and many other exciting aspects of technology. Besides this, the workshop also aimed at spreading the robotic science throughout the neighbouring technical students and Institution.

Many students from various technical institution, schools and colleges became a part of this workshop and shared their knowledge and experience with the students of NITS Mirza. Students from AEC, Tezpur University, GIMT, Dibrugarh University and many schools and colleges were a part of this event. Various robots were built during this technical summer camp. The participants learned the basics of robotics and the technical students were given more emphasis on autonomous robotic programming to run a robot using basically Atmega8 and to display various signals on a LCD using programming software named WinAVR.

Apart from that, the students learned how to construct H-Bridge using few diodes, resistors and transistors, light sensors using LM358, photodiode and IR led, speed controller using 555-timer, etc. They also learned the use of relay switches, Integrated Circuits (IC), etc. The workshop ignited many interested many students to go in depth in the robotic world. The camp was as a whole a great stage for the upcoming technical talent. The students of NITS MIrza will do their best to organised such workshop in the upcoming future too and keep the robotic trend in the Institution.

NITS MIRZA AT CHANDMARI

ASTEC' 10, the science exhibition held in Chandmari was indeed avery fascinating and amusing event for science enthusiasts. Many institutions, engineering colleges and other private organizations participated in it but Nits Mirza was one among the names that was worth mentioning .The Nits Mirza pioneer batch took up robotics open heartedly and everyone showed great enthusiasm and labored hard to take NITS Mirza to a completely new level where the college would gain much desired appreciation from everyone. And so we did succeed in achieving that, our work received appreciation from the media, the viewers, and other colleges and also from a few well known peoples.

We displayed NETES Remote Lab, which had many hi-tech equipment set up in the Pan-Bazar NETES Lab and can be accessed through the internet.

We also displayed manually controlled robotic cars, autonomous obstacle detector robotic cars and autonomous line follower bots that our ’09 batch students built for various Engineering colleges technical fests.
